CNN —The forceful direct examination of former Trump fixer-turned-star prosecution witness Michael Cohen concluded Tuesday in the Manhattan criminal trial of former President Donald Trump. But the cross was uneven and Cohen, like Stormy Daniels before him, held his own. Whether that will change in the days ahead remains to be seen, but in any event, the cross of Cohen got off to an inauspicious start. ), his anti-Trump podcast (showing bias, but Cohen owned it) and even selling anti-Trump merchandise (showing financial motive, but again failing to get a rise out of Cohen). However, even when Blanche confronted Cohen with his most inflammatory social media comments, such as calling Trump a “dictator douchebag” and a “Cheeto-dusted cartoon villain,” Cohen was utterly unfazed.

Inflation canceled that, and now it's almost certain that Wall Street's summer is canceled, too. That means Wall Street's fantasies of decamping to the Hamptons for the summer have shattered. You can see why this tug-of-war will keep Wall Street on its toes and off Georgica Beach. There is a certain set on Wall Street that does not get to "rosé all day" on Hamptons summer water when currencies trade that way. The simplicity that Wall Street hoped for is one of the few options that's no longer on the table.

),” by John McWhorter (Opinion, April 16):The currency of the standing ovation is indeed seriously debased. The impulse to stand up during the ovation following a performance may in some cases represent a kind of unconscious one-upmanship. I confess that although I invariably applaud performances, I usually “sit out” the competitive appreciation derby, and haul myself to my feet only if I feel particularly inspired. To the Editor:I admit that I’m often among the first to give a standing ovation. I always wondered why the holdouts would deny something so simple to these hardworking actors.

Which are the 12 best songs — not just in absolute terms, but in terms of the whole (the album) being constructed out of the parts (the songs)? Which of these songs do they want to play live dozens of times on their upcoming concert tour? For a very different analysis of Swift, consider these comments on X from Katherine Boyle, an Andreessen Horowitz venture capitalist, repurposing a take she offered in 2023. In our cultural environment, Boyle argues, being prolific is everything: “You can’t cede ground to competitors. If Taylor writes 31 songs and 3 are memorable, she’s written three epic songs.

In the old days of American theater, the 1950s and before, even megastars like Ethel Merman did not regularly get standing ovations. Standing ovations meant a performance was truly extraordinary. Some have attributed the trend to the tourists who fill many of the seats at Broadway shows; they may be less familiar with theater and therefore especially enthusiastic. But standing ovations are the default even at shows and plays that attract few tourists, and besides, tourists have been flocking to New York since long before the 1990s. I think that made theater, by contrast, feel more special — “live performance,” as we now refer to it.

But when it comes to chicken stock, Garten believes the ready-made version is "meh." "I think of homemade chicken stock as liquid gold," Garten writes in "Go-to Dinners," her most recent cookbook. Opinion | What Makes a Coincidence Meaningful?

There are two kinds of people in the world: People who say, “What a coincidence,” and people who say, “Just a coincidence.” Same facts, different reactions. I attended an economics conference in the World Trade Center on Sept. 10, 2001, and decided not to go back for the second day. (The conference was below ground level, so everybody who stayed for Sept. 11 got out safely, for what it’s worth.) For example, rolling a die and getting 6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6-6 seems more surprising than getting, say, 6-2-4-5-1-3-2-5-4-6, but the two are equally probable. Remember that it’s any two people, not necessarily you and someone else, so there are many potential pairs.

What we still don't know: Why would someone pay $50 a month for this? AdvertisementAfter all, if you like paying for streaming TV, you can pay $73 a month for YouTube TV. So, again: If you're a big enough sports fan that you want to pay for streaming TV, don't you also want all of the sports on streaming TV? And, yes: Spending $50 a month on something instead of $73 a month on something is meaningfully cheaper. Now he's asking them to pay an extra $50 a month — and not get everything they want.

AdvertisementThere are some people who really, really like Super Bowl ads. I’ve heard for years about the idea that wireless carriers would eventually take on the big broadband companies by selling “fixed wireless” broadband — broadband you can get via 5G airwaves using a box you put in your window instead of relying on cables buried in the ground. If I were, I would know that competition from fixed wireless has been keeping the broadband guys up at night for some time. The broadband guys are happy to tell you why they think their internet is better than the wireless internet the telco guys are selling. But for the moment, we know the cable guys — that is, the broadband guys — are no longer taking the fixed wireless guys for granted.

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the third Republican presidential debate, held in Miami on Wednesday night. The debate didn’t answer the question of whether she can really cut into DeSantis’s more conservative bloc of support. He deserves praise for his substantive, competent answers, but there’s not much of a market for that in the Republican primaries. After a 21-month tech IPO freeze, the market has cracked opened in the past week. Chip designer Arm debuted last Thursday, followed by grocery-delivery company Instacart this Tuesday, and cloud software vendor Klaviyo the following day. I’ve got 99 problems with A.I., but intellectual property ain’t one. Media and entertainment industries have lately been consumed with questions about how content generated by artificial intelligence systems should be considered under intellectual property law. And major news companies — including The Times — are weighing steps to guard the intellectual property that flows from their journalism. tools, the more I suspect that many of the intellectual property questions they prompt will ultimately prove less significant than we sometimes assume. Indeed, I’d bet that artists and creative industries will ultimately find A.I.

EQT’s India IVF buyout hits on fertile themes
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
MUMBAI, Aug 1 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Private equity giant EQT (EQTAB.ST) is buying a majority stake in the country’s largest fertility clinic chain Indira IVF via its Asian unit BPEA EQT, valuing the firm at $1.1 billion. Indira IVF serves some of the 15% of Indian couples experiencing infertility, a problem on the rise in the world’s most populous country as people marry later and air pollution stifles the ability to conceive naturally. EQT’s deal also is another bet on the changing demands of the South Asian nation’s middle class. Thanks to the gradual maturing of the private equity business, both purchases come with the added benefit of the buyer taking control.
